The Deadly Combination Of Fish &
Toddy |
A small break to drink Toddy with fish
fry |
|
|
28th
October (contd.)
We took a break when we reached a small island. We stopped
there and came out of our boat onto the island. There was a
small eating joint selling fried fish. |
|
 |
To call that
piece of land an island will be wrong. It was sort of a
marshy land. There were lots of coconut trees providing
us cool shade.
We decided to have fried fish. The shop owner offered
Toddy. In the beginning, I was skeptical, it was pungent
and I didn't like it. But other guys like Suman, Writo
and Gautam were having it. So I also decided to have
Toddy. After sometime, we got one more jug of Toddy. We
were also having fried fish. They tasted really great.
Hot, spicy and crunchy, they went well with Toddy.
Shre and Nitin were content with coconut water.

Toddy
is very popular in this region. It is basically fermented
coconut water/ juice/ milk. As the day progresses, the liquid
becomes more fermented and stronger. Lucky that we had our
drinks in the morning. It definitely makes one dizzy and is
nothing but a sort of country liquor of this region. |
|
 |
We also saw a
houseboat. Infact, latter in the day, we would see many
more.
These house boats are quite big and can accommodate
two couples easily. Food is cooked and served by the
boatmen. They are complete with wash rooms and bed
rooms.

These
house boats are ideal for honeymoon couples (???). But they are
very costly. When we heard that typical off-season rate for one
night stay is about six thousand rupees, we simply stopped
talking about them. There are many things which are better
looked at than experienced. House boat, we felt, was one of
them! |
|
 |
We resumed our
cruise once again. In about two hours, we would reach
Alleppy.
The Toddy was taking effect on us slowly. The sun was
also too bright and hot. So we decided to rest a while
inside the deck.
