This trip was
long overdue! I and my colleagues had been thinking for
a long time for some outing. In our company (Polaris
Software Labs),
we have a concept called Stream
Outing. We go out to some place, near or far, and
just chill out! This is our way of recharging the
batteries.
We decided to go to Kodaikanal. Kodaikanal is a very
popular hill station of South India. This place boasts
of gentle wooded hills, mighty rocks, dense forests and
yes a very serene lake in the middle of the hill
station. A typical morning bright sunshine, a gentle but
warm afternoon, a cool breezy evening and a cold night
greets you when you reach Kodaikanal.

Kodaikanal
is well connected to most of the big cities in Tamil
Nadu. One can take a train to Kodai (from Chennai) and
then reach Kodaikanal (that is the hill top) by buses,
taxis or cars. Another way to reach the hill station is
to take a 12 hours direct bus from Chennai to Kodaikanal,
which is what we did. We had booked a bus for ourselves
for the entire trip. It helped us a lot while we were in
Kodaikanal. We started in the evening from Chennai
and reached Kodaikanal in the morning. |

We stayed at
Iggi resort. It is about 1 1/2 kms from the lake and
provides a good view of the valley.
We did some trekking at a point
called Dolphin's Nose. This provides a breathtaking view
of the valley.
One must try to visit the Berijam forest. To visit
this dense forest, one must need to get the permit from
the forest office. |

The Kodai lake like any other hill station lake is beautiful.
The calm water, the gentle waves and the soft breeze is a
perfect recipe for a idyllic boat ride. There are many types and
sizes of boats that one can avail of. Since we had a big group,
we settled for a bigger one with a majhi (boatman).

The month of
July is ideal for a Kodai visit. Well, others might
differ but I stand by it.
For one, the rains do not start in July but one might
still get some showers. And it is these showers which
can make the trip more pleasant. Offcourse, too much
would be a big trouble.
Secondly, the weather is perfect. A cool morning and
evening breeze and a bright sunshine in the noons
coupled with sudden dark clouds and some rains, add to
the fun.
And finally, the forests look refreshingly green and
fog and mist makes them more enticing!
