Trip to Dakshineswar (Period: June 2002)

Dakshineswar Temple in Kolkata is a very famous Kali temple. Built on the bank of Hoogly river, this temple is linked to the greatest bengali saint - Ramakrishna Paramahansa. The temple architecture is simple and unobtrusive. The calm and serene atmosphere of the temple along with the idyllic flow of Hoogly, makes this place a wonderful place to visit in the evening.

I like this temple very much. Unlike many other Hindu temples, this temple has a big courtyard, thus making the place look less crowded.

The evening prayer (aarti) is one big attraction. Add to that the usually cool breeze of the river and the sight of boats will make anyone to stay back, as long as possible.

The temple has a rich and somewhat enigmatic history too! Sri Ramakrishna was the priest of this temple when it was built by Queen Rashmoni somewhere in 1850s.

It is said that, Goddess Kali appeared before Sri Ramakrishna in her physical form in this temple.

It is one of the most sacred Kali pilgrimages in India.

There are twelve smaller Lord Shiva temples; six on each side of the main temple and facing it.

From these temples, one can see the river and people taking sacred bath.

On both the sides of the main temple, there are two big halls. They house many Hindu Gods. They also serve as the resting place for many pilgrims.
